Flying on Shabbat: Getting to Ben Gurion Without Trains

Ben Gurion runs on Shabbat; most of the public transport to it does not. What that means for your pickup time, for Saturday night and for the price

Ben Gurion does not stop for Shabbat. Flights depart and land throughout the weekend and the terminals stay open. What does stop is most of the public transport that serves the airport. That gap - an airport that runs against a railway that does not - is where people get stuck, and almost always at two points: Friday afternoon and Saturday night. Here is what to settle in advance so it does not happen to you.

What runs and what does not

The short picture, before we get to the hours:

  • The airport - runs on Shabbat and on the holidays. There are departures and arrivals all weekend.
  • The train - does not run from Friday afternoon until Shabbat ends, nor on the holidays.
  • Most bus routes - stop at roughly the same times.
  • Shared taxis and shuttle lines - operate on some routes, at low frequency and with no guaranteed hour.
  • A transfer booked in advance - runs around the clock, Shabbat and holidays included, with a person answering the phone.

Friday: the day shrinks from midday

Friday is a short day, and that changes the whole calculation. Traffic peaks around midday rather than in the late afternoon, and services start winding down early. Anyone planning to take the train to an evening flight may find that the last one left far earlier than expected, leaving them to improvise at the most pressured hour of the week.

The practical recommendation for Friday is simple: book a pickup earlier than you would choose midweek, and do not count on being able to change it at the last minute. Friday afternoon is one of the busiest windows in our weekly calendar.

Saturday night: the weekly peak

Everything that could not happen from Friday midday onwards is compressed into the two or three hours after Shabbat ends. On top of that comes the wave of Saturday-night and early-week flights. The result is that these are the hardest hours of the week in which to find a free vehicle - not through any general shortage, but because everyone wants exactly the same window.

What to do about it: book the Saturday-night ride in the same call as everything else, not on Friday. And if you can choose between a pickup immediately after Shabbat ends and one two hours later, the later slot is almost always easier to get.

Landing on Shabbat: what to arrange in advance

Landing on Shabbat looks simple until you walk out of the terminal. There is no train, some options are not running, and the queue outside the arrivals hall is longer than usual because everyone who landed is in exactly the same position. A transfer booked in advance settles this beforehand: the driver is already there, and meeting is a matter of one phone call.

Two details make it smooth. The first is the flight number - with it we track the actual landing and update the driver ourselves, so a delay to the flight is not charged. The second is the wait: it is free for up to 60 minutes, and the clock starts at the real landing rather than the time printed on the ticket.

What it costs on Shabbat

Shabbat and holiday hours are priced differently from weekday hours, and the difference is stated to you upfront on the call - no meter running, no surprise at the end of the road. The price is settled before departure, so you know exactly what to have ready. Sometimes shifting the ride by an hour or two changes the picture, and when it does we will say so rather than wait to be asked.

Payment is made directly to the driver at the end of the ride, in cash or by Bit transfer. If paying on Shabbat does not work for you, tell us when booking - that kind of thing is arranged in advance on the phone, not with the driver at the kerb.

Observing Shabbat: settle everything before it starts

A large share of our weekend rides are for people who do not travel during Shabbat itself. In practice that means two possible pickup windows - up to Friday midday, or after Shabbat ends - and both are among the busiest of the week. What makes the difference is not only booking early but closing every detail before Shabbat comes in: the hour, the exact address, the vehicle, the price and how it will be paid.

It is worth thinking about contact in advance too. If your phone will not be reachable on Shabbat, give us a second number for someone who can be updated, or agree an exact meeting point with us - building, entrance and side of the street. That way the driver does not depend on a phone call to find you, and it works even when nobody can answer.

When to book

Weekend lead times run longer than midweek ones:

  • A Friday ride - 3 to 4 days ahead. For a midday pickup, closer to four.
  • A Saturday-night ride - 5 to 7 days. This is the most sought-after window of the week.
  • A ride during Shabbat itself - a week ahead and no less. Fewer vehicles run, and the hours are in demand.
  • A van or minibus for a group - 10 to 14 days, for any of these slots.
  • A weekend that runs into a holiday - add a week to all of the above. Those weekends behave like a full holiday eve.

What to tell us when you book

On a weekend the details matter more than usual, because they cannot be filled in as you go:

  • Date and time - and say whether the pickup is before Shabbat comes in or after it ends.
  • A full address - street, number, entrance and town.
  • Passenger and luggage counts - they decide whether we send a seven-seat taxi, a van or a minibus.
  • A flight number - on any ride to or from the airport.
  • Ages and weights of the children - if safety seats are needed.
  • A reachable phone, or an alternative - a second number or a meeting point agreed in advance.

The rule for Shabbat: settle the details before it comes in, not after. A ride agreed on Thursday still works when nobody can pick up the phone.
